Little Miss SunshineInspired by a video post (see below) by fellow curvy-girl & yoga rock star, Anna Guest-Jelly of Curvy Yoga, I wanted to chime in and offer my own thoughts on a very important (and tricky) question she received from a reader:

"It it possible to fully accept my body while still eventually, wanting to shed some pounds?"

As someone who advocates loving your body no matter what size, this question is actually pretty tough and I really congratulate my body-positive peer Anna for even taking on the question -- it's not an easy one to answer.

So here is my first repose: YES YOU CAN! TOTALLY - ABSOLUTELY...but guess what, it kinda makes me squirm even saying that. 

This is a question I think about a lot because sometimes I feel torn between wanting to lose a few pounds but feeling like a total hypocrite for that too. Anna's explanation is beautiful and after some serious thought,  came to an answer for myself: Right now, I'm in stabilize mode - that is, I've spent all my adult life trying to lose weight and now that I've ended the need to alter my body, I'm really enjoying reclaiming my body and appreciate what a diet-less life is like. I believe it is totally possible to want to lose weight while still loving and accepting your body. And when I'm ready to lose weight in the future, I'm so excited to do so in a healthy-minded & body-positive way. In fact, the whole point of my work IS helping women love who they are right now so they have a solid foundation of self-love to enhance and support other life changes they want to make.

But here is the most important part of that question - you need to arrive at an answer that makes sense FOR YOU.

Losing weight isn't bad at all. Losing weight can bring forth a lot of pleasant things that each individual has to experience for themselves. Losing weight only becomes counter-productive when you believe that you MUST lose weight to be happy with yourself.  I've been there done that, and losing weight as a prerequisite for loving yourself simply doesn't work.

Since I decided to stop dieting and stop trying to change my body a wonderful thing started happening -- I've naturally lost some weight. People have even commented that my body-shape looks different, and it has; but all I did was stop trying to control my body. If I choose to lose weight in the future, it's not because I think I'll "look better" but because I just simply want to. When you remove the emotion behind your body-story, weight then become as trivial as the color of your hair. Change it, don't change it. It doesn't say anything about your true worth.

When it comes to your own life, there isn't a right or wrong answer to this question -- there is only what you believe and how that makes you feel.
