It's nearly fall time here in Boston and if I could legally in the state of Massachusetts marry something else, it would be autumn. Our wedding last year was in fall, so I guess that's close enough! But really fall is lovely, pretty, yummy and honestly a LOT cooler out, which means....I GET TO WEARING CUTE CLOTHING IN WHICH I WON'T SWEAT MY BRAIN OUTS IN.
So, I thought it would be fun to show some simple styles and looks I'm getting ready to rock this fall.
While I wouldn't consider myself a fashion guru, I like to think I know how to work with what I've got :) My fashion style isn't so much concerned with keeping up to date with latest trends - I focus mainly on higher quality item that I'll be able to wear for a long time and mix and match.
Off the bat though, shopping when your plus size can feel like TORTURE. I don't have to explain this too much, but I do want to encourage you that it's very possible to look great within your budget and size - you just need to shop and style wisely. OH and have FUN, lots of fun.
With each look (which I give silly names, but that's me) I have included links on where you can buy the items too! You deserve to dress well, comfortably, and to the beat of your own curvy drum,
I'd also LOVE the comments on this blog to be full of great plus-size fashion links, resources and ideas..so make sure you share them below so others can see. And if you have a blog/site yourself, POST IT there too!
Sometimes a perk comes along that you can't ignore...like when a really great clothing company (Ashley Stewart in this case!) says "HEY, CAN WE SEND YOU FREE STUFF IF YOU POST IT?!"
"Um yes! And since I'd never buy them myself..gimme 'dem leopard pants!"
Ashley Stewart provided the leopard pants & denim tunic. And both are SO comfy and very stylish. Shoes are from Naturalizer (wide width, great for plus-size feet) and my bag was a splurge last year, Cole Haan,
Screw that "don't wear white post-Labor Day" -- I'll wear what I want, when I want & you're going to LIKE IT.
White denim vest was a glorious find at GAP; cowel-neck shirt & curvy jeans (they fit amazingly, btw) from Ashley Stewart; necklace is from Francesca's and probably the most complimented item I've had all summer. And no, you can't eat it and yes, I did try...maybe more than once.
Black skinny jeans are one of the BEST I've ever worn, get them at City Chic; shoes are leopard heels by Naturalizer's again.
This look is a bit of mash-up of an older skirt from Eloquii and a cotton blazer from GAP. Hair in a braid, I dig the braid for days I'm running late to work and end up saying "Meh, this'll work." It's simple, easy and cute :)
Ok, the vest makes me feel like a powerful woman from the 80's and also like I could crash a prom at any moment. I love it. The vest and pants are from Eloquii...the pants are supposed to be "crops" but because I'm short, they are ankle pants! (That's a great tip, for my plus-size shorties out there) Shirt was a snag from Old Navy because I saw it and thought "Oooo nautical!". The bun is actually a little tricky, I have this hair tool from Conair (I call it FUN BUN) which helps style it. It's basically a round brillo-pad you use to mold the hair. I guess I could also clean the stove with it sometime?
This look is taking two fairly dull items, but pairing them together and using accessories to bump it up a bit. You can't see the back, but this shirt scoops pretty low. I got it from GAP last week and it goes to XXL. I'd like to note, GAP seems to have adjusted their sizes because their XL's fit me, so that's cool. Skirt is from H&M and stylish little scarf made into a head-scarf was a thrift find (the only thing I actually have patience for in those stores..)
This isn't really a fall outfit..more one I'll wear all winter. BUT I did want to point out the boots, which I literally hunted to find for 3 years. THREE LONG YEARS. I didn't even find them, my husband did in the mall one day and said "RACH, BOOTS!!" and I had a freak-out when I tried them on. They are amazing, come in wide-calf, and are VERY comfy and weather proofed. Rockport makes them in two colors...seriously, get them. They are practical AND stylin'.
I love scarves...they make every thing go from "Oh, this same old thing again....sigh sigh" to "WOW, YOU KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT STYLE!!!" I don't go out looking for scarves...they find me...like the IRS of fashion.
Ok, it's more like 350...sometimes I don't care. But my hair is perhaps my FAVORITE thing on my body, so I make sure I treat it well with fun styles and good grooming (like Moroccan Oil line). My hair is long enough for just about any style, so I sometimes spend a Sunday night practicing looks. Fall ones are braids, messy-buns and letting it be naturally curly, but I can also straighten out since the dank and humidity is no longer oppressing me.
And finally.....those little details, nails, make-up, things that you do because you think others will like you better!!!!!! Wait no, that's not MTL worthy!...Things that you do because you LIKE doing them and they make you feel great!! Yes! YES!
If you've even made it this far....bless your heart! This was a strange post -- but honestly, this is how I am when I'm not channeling my inner life coach and bein' all serious about body love and life. I think fashion is FUN to play with and if I take myself too seriously, then it's no fun anymore. And I hope you scored some ideas, links and goodies!
